[Staff of the Masters] can be made with [Glowstone] + [Recipe] + (any combination of 2 different +10 str/agi/int items)

Steam boats can be made with a combination of [Marchers] + [Gloves of the Swift] + (any of the the +6 str/sgi/int) items

When you are in the field make sure that you use the 'B' (shop) hotkey; saving you from loosing that saved money if/when you die (don't forget the outposts). You can get the courier to bring you items by grouping it (CTRL+Number): if you want an item; press the number, then 'B', buy it, press SHIFT+E, SHIFT+R. Make sure you are not near enemies when the courier arrives.

Always remember that there is a human-being controlling your opponents. Remember that unlike a computer opponent, you can play mind games with them. Also remember to treat them and your allies with respect.

Keep moving, at all times (unless you are hiding in a juke spot). Many hero abilities require tricky timing based on where the enemy is going. It is a 0 gold semi-counter for some heroes - as it can make the game very tricky for the player controlling them. Look at Gladiator's abilities, for example.

Meshing with your team is very important. Always be aware of what they are doing and how your actions around them fit into the overall game. If you are going to be doing something unorthodox make sure you tell them beforehand. If you have never played your hero; tell them and ask for advice (and consider picking up new heroes in nostats games).

Always be aware of what is happening on the minimap: it's like your car's rear-view mirror. If someone neglects to call miss you will have a better chance at evading a gank if you are keeping an eye on the minimap.

Homecoming Stones (referred to as TPs; or port) are the most used/bought item in the game. Always have one in your inventory (unless you have Post Haste) after the laning phase ends. Roamers (like Andromeda) and pull of some great ganks by having them handy even earlier in the game.

The HoN hotkeys are much simpler to use than most other games. Simply learning to use 'Q','W','E','R' will improve your game very quickly. If you are finding it hard to deny creeps start using the 'A' hotkey. Think about rebinding 'Stop and Hold Position' to 'Spacebar'.
